The Elf on a Shelf -- A Christmas Tradition gift set contains not only a beautiful storybook but a North Pole scout elf and collectible box.
The concept behind this unique children's book is brilliant. Through the book, children are told a story about their magical North Pole scout elf, which they get to name. Each night after the children are fast asleep, the scout elf flies to the North Pole to report to Santa. Then he returns to the children's home in the middle of the night and lands in a new location within the home.
This book and elf have the power to turn every morning into an exciting adventure. Children will excitedly search the home to discover the elf's newest landing spot (note to parents: don't forget to move the elf at night). In addition, the elf makes for a great behavior incentive-kids don't want the elf to give Santa a bad report. Genius!

I heard a lot of my friends talking about this book and was interested. It seemed a bit high in price to me, but we used a coupon and a gift card which made it seem more reasonable. My children loved the story and got so into it. We purchased it yesterday and this morning they were so excited to come downstairs to find Elfie (our current name, we haven't decided for sure so I am waiting to record it in the book). It helped a bit with some behavior and fighting issues. Although the illustrations in the book were not quite as good as I had hoped for, the fact that my children love it and are having a good time with it makes up for that. i would recommend this book to people with small children.
A Bad "Tradition"

My mother bought this for my sons age 6 and 3, after I requested another book about Elves. I was looking for a story about "real" magical elves that live in the forest and create a sense of wonder for children. This book was written by a teacher whose job is to obviously find any way to make kids behave. The "songs" and story are about behaving properly or else.....the elf will report to Santa and if you're "bad" no presents for you on Christmas morning! There are examples of kids behaving badly throughout the book, no positive messages. If you believe children are inherently bad and need to bribe them to behave you may enjoy this farce of a tradition. I had my mother return this book. I would never expose my kids to this teacher's school like behavior modification especially as we prepare for Christmas. "A Christmas Tradition?" What a joke!
If you truly want your kids to behave, treat them with respect, or read Alfie Kohn's book "Punished by Rewards" to learn how this type of discipline really affects kids in the long run. |
We get it, it's a new tradition

We really love the little story and elf, it is so adorable and my 4yo daughter loves it. My only complaint is the way they beat into your head that it's going to be your new family tradition. A tradition is started when you do something fun and decide to do it again the next year, not when someone hands you a box with the words "your new family tradition" written all over it lol. At the end of the book they make you write down the day you start your new tradition. But even though that part is annoying, as a whole it is cute and we will use him again next year, we did name him Robert after all hehe :)
A Tradition Older Than You Think

In the 1950's my parents had a tiny elf they would bring out and place high up on a shelf on December 1st. The elf would be in a different location each morning. What fun to try and find him. If I dared climb up and try to grab him, why, he'd turn to plastic! Horrors. Then on Christmas morning he would disappear. Santa took him back with him after depositing the presents under the tree. So this story or tradition has been around a lot longer than the 70's. And the funny thing... I was about to write a similiar story about my growing up with an elf on the shelf!

I highly recommend this product. We just got the book and elf...my kids were hooked immediately. We read the book four times last night and they called me this morning to tell me where they found him. I wish I would have found out about this two years ago!!!!
